Salute
By Elton Wildermuth, 1997
Standing all her troops to attention,
ordering her staff into line,
my commandant will brook no dissension:
she surely put some starch in my spine.
You might not think she's pretty,
and nobody calls her cute,
but there's something about a woman in uniform
makes me want to salute!
All her men fall out for inspection
when she examines her infantries.
Gratefully receiving correction,
double-time, we hustle to please.
Let me tell you a little story,
just a little bit of an allegory,
talking about no guts, no glory,
orders that I cannot refute.
I never was much for self-effacement;
don't keep my my body in debasement,
but when she comes to my gun emplacement,
I'm getting ready to shoot!
Ordered to report for induction,
no excuses, no comprise,
and when she is providing instruction
her lessons make my blood pressure rise.
