Gilbert's Greatsword (Elegy for Gilbert de Langspee)

By Leigh Ann Hussey, 1991

Braw and bold, he went a-raiding;
stout and strong, he went to war.
Long his lady will be waiting;
Gilbert's greatsword strikes no more.
Forth he fared without foreboding,
blithe as Baldur, brisk as Thor.
Soon he sails to sup with Odin;
Gilbert's greatsword strikes no more.
Bring the burning brands to light him;
liberal libations pour.
Still his steel now lies beside him;
Gilbert's greatsword strikes no more.
Gold and gear are with him faring,
voyaging to Valhall's door,
bright the blazing vessel bearing;
Gilbert's greatsword strikes no more.
