Awakening
By Billie Mandel, 1996
I am drowning in sweat, I awake with a scream
I eat but don't taste, I doze but don't dream, you know
this static inaction's unspeakable violence
I clamor in terror, but I hear only silence.
I am poised at the edge, unfettered and hungry
Enraptured remain, but the fear it devours me
From boredom I run, into chaos I'm diving
inferno consumed, from carbon I'm rising now.
I'm ecstatic and ripe, with nectar I bleed and I make
skeletons breathe -- their desire they feed now
Exploding with life, adrenaline brilliant
My body's a fountain so come drink your fill
We are drinking the sun, we are crying the ocean
We're vibrant in sleep and exultant in motion
We're locked in embrace with the serpent of knowing
The living stand watch as we fly...
